Effective Reef LED wall light with fine-pored lampshade made of ceramic foam

The Reef LED wall light has a very special appeal to those who see it. A design that is both playful and linear featuring materials that could not be more different – Reef is a very characterful light. The base of the light – a glossy polished bracket with corners and edges, made from high-quality aluminium may seem less than spectacular at first sight. It is the lampshade that piques the attention – it is hard to make out what it is made from at first. You probably won't recognise this extraordinary material, as it is something you rarely come across in everyday life. Reef's lampshade is made from ceramic foam – a special material, which is used in the field of thermal insulation, for example. Ceramic foam is generally manufactured from aluminium oxide and foaming components. When subjected to heat, they form tiny bubbles which in turn result in the characteristic structure.

A material like this – with a pore volume of more than 96 percent and that is heavily flame-retardant, heat-resistant and durable – is perfect for the field of lighting technology, and goes to show how fascinating light can be when it is combined with the right materials. The designers from next space, an architecture firm from Kassel, certainly had this thought when they created the series of lights called Reef. When the light is switched on, this wall light creates a totally unique effect thanks to the fine-pored ceramic foam. Reef can be installed as an uplighter or downlight, and thus can be adapted to suit the individual requirements of the room in question and the individual desires of the user. Reef’s lampshade is dishwasher-proof for easy cleaning. The light can also be combined with a leading or trailing edge dimmer for brightness control.
